FAQ: WHAT IS A HALF HIDE OF LEATHER?

In an effort to accommodate orders of all sizes, we offer clients the opportunity to purchase in full and half hide increments. Half hides are split from top to bottom of a hide rather than side to side. This provides the most consistent quality of leather in each order.

FAQ: WHAT IS A BRAHMA HIDE? WHY DOES MY LEATHER HIDE HAVE A HOLE IN THE MIDDLE?

Brahma hides come from a type of cow that have a hump in the neck area of the hide which creates a small slit or hole. Typically these areas are not used when cutting leather and have no impact on yield. Check the product notes on our leather patterns to determine if it is a Brahma hide.

GENUINE LEATHER GLOSSARY

ANILINE A type of leather dyed exclusively with soluble dyes without covering the surface with a topcoat paint or pigment. The resulting product retains the natural surface with the grain.
BRAHMA HIDE A type of cow that has a hump in the neck area of the hide which creates a small slit of hole. Typically these areas are not used when cutting leather and have no impact on yield.
CORRECTED GRAIN Referring to the surface of the leather, which has been sanded, buffed and altered to form a uniform grain texture.
FULL GRAIN Leather in which the original grain layer has not been altered.
HAIR ON HIDE Leather that has been tanned and conditioned without removing the hair from the skin or hide.
PIGMENTED Leather that has been sprayed with a pigmented, opaque finish. Pigmented leathers provide consistency in color.
SEMI-ANILINE Semi-aniline leather has been aniline dyed and finished with a process that includes a light surface coating of pigment for enhanced scratch and abrasion resistance as well as color consistency, but not so much as to completely conceal the natural characteristics of the hide. Semi-aniline leathers will exhibit a more consistent color and fewer natural markings than aniline leathers.
TOP GRAIN The grain split of a hide from which nothing has been removed except the hair.
